Once Upon A Time

This introspective ballad by Scott Alan was inspired by his love of Disney movies. Jam-packed with Disney references, the lyrics ask the question: when will I find my "once upon a time" -- when will I find true meaning in my life, whatever form it may take? The arrangement (newly revised in 2024) was based on his original demo version of the song, and it starts with a gorgeous soprano solo feature.

For years I have been waiting for someone to break the spell
Like the one placed on the beast where all it took was Belle
Where's my fairy godmother to save me from this life
'Cause this here is no fairy tale and I am no Snow White

I am my own captor, caught inside a kingdom
Hiding from myself for all these years
I've become the victim, bit into the apple
Waiting for a savior to appear
Making more excuses, why I'm getting nowhere,
Wishing my whole life could realign
And I'm still waiting for my once upon a time

I pricked my finger on a wheel and I've been sleeping since
I traded in my voice for love but still no charming prince
I ran back as the clock struck twelve and forgot to leave a shoe
Without any fairy dust, can wishes still come true?

'Cause I was once a dreamer, then I drank the poison
Tripped and fell right down the rabbit hole
I became complacent, hid up in a tower
Once I was so young but now I'm old
Looking in the mirror, hate my own reflection
Wish I was a real boy in my prime
And I'm still waiting for my once upon a time

The right road may not always be the easy one to take
But a dream is just a dream until it wakes

I am on a mission, gotta keep on swimming
It's my chance to see what's left to know
I won't stop at nothing, tired of playing the victim,
Now's the time to finally let it go
This is not a story with a perfect ending
Time to let my conscience be my guide
'Cause there has gotta be more than this
Once upon a time
